A person tried to ram a police cruiser on the U.S. Capitol grounds Wednesday morning and shots were fired during the incident, police said. They said one person is in custody.

The incident started at 9:30 a.m. when calls came in for shots fired outside the Rayburn building. A D.C. Police spokesperson said someone in a vehicle tried to ram a U.S. Capitol Police cruiser and tried to run over several other officers. U.S. Capitol police officers pursued the person on foot.

By 9:45 a.m., the suspect was in police custody. The person was caught at 3rd Street and Independence Avenue, according to D.C. police.

The D.C. police spokesperson said no one was struck by the bullets.

Eva Malecki, the communications director for the U.S. Capitol Police, said at a press conference that the shots were fired in the process of an arrest. It was not clear who had fired the shots and Malecki did not specify.
